The Prayer Quilt is a symbol of a faith sharing community
"covering with prayer the individual who receives it."

The SCWC has partnered with Phyliss Zloch, a parishioner and member of the East Sunrise Quilter's Guild, who makes these beautiful prayer quilts for any individual it is requested for.  Often, these quilts are personalized for the individual requested for, so it can take some time for the quilt to be made.  Each quilt contains the person's name along with the following message:  "This Prayer Quilt was made with prayers for the healing of your Body, Mind & Spirit.  As you use this quilt, may you feel the warm embrace of our Heavenly Father."  After the quilts are completed, they are brought to one of the parish priests for blessing. Those who are to receive the quilt are held in prayer. These beautiful acts truly transform the quilt into a "Prayer Quilt" whose very threads become interwoven with pleas for healing on behalf of the recipient.  We have been told from people who have received the quilt that they not only feel better when using it but felt the peace of God.

This gift of prayer blankets or quilts originated at the M.D. Anderson Hospital, in Houston, TX where the chaplain who gave prayer blankets to the sick found that they so uplifted the patients that she began to deliver them on a regular basis. Blankets were given to hospital patients, the sick at home, the Veteran's Hospital and cancer support groups. Missionaries presented them to the orphaned, very elderly, and those who were sick in Guatemala and Volograd, Russia. The gift was received as another wonderful way that people are doing God's work.

Prayer Quilts bring comfort to the suffering and peace to the fearful. When one sees and touches these quilts, they know they are not alone - that they are covered in prayer and there are those who do care about them.

We are truly blessed to have been able to partner with Phyliss who gives abundantly of her time, talent, and treasure, making Prayer Quilts possible for the SCWC to gift these beautiful and meaningful quilts to those in need..
